MOMENTUM Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics

Team contacts: Oona Campbell, Veronique Filippi, Loveday Penn-Kekana

Three academics from the Maternal and Newborn Health Group – Oona Campbell (PI), Veronique Filippi and Loveday Penn-Kekana – are partnering with EngenderHealth to implement the MOMENTUM Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics project. This project promotes awareness of, and equitable access to, safe surgery for women. The $40 million USAID-funded project will team up with local partners and country institutions to improve childbirth outcomes and better meet people’s voluntary family planning needs.

LSHTM is one of three core partners joining EngenderHealth to collaborate in a number of related areas: assessment, evaluation, and research aimed at improving the availability and quality of caesarean delivery; childbirth-related hysterectomy; fistula prevention, screening and treatment; voluntary family planning services, particularly long-acting reversible contraceptives and permanent methods. In addition, LSHTM will collaborate on knowledge dissemination and data-use efforts to support institutionalisation of fistula prevention, treatment, and reintegration services.
